If Jasper Were A Song....
Ok. I will disclaim this entry with the fact that it may be schmaltzy even for me. Jasper is doing great...beyond great. So much so that I may start blogging about other items in addition to him soon. But in the mean time, I thought I'd share the lyrics of an '80s song that popped into my head (and has not left) as we got home from our morning walk and he just turned around and grinned at me. I know the lyrics apply to Jasper and I know they apply to so many of us in our human lives...I thank Maggie and PAWS Hancock for starting Japser on a new life path - they are miracle workers...I hope to continue his path and fill his life with love!
I Want To Know What Love Is Foreigner
....In my life there's been heartache and pain I don't know if I can face it again Can't stop now, I've traveled too far To change this lonely life
I want to know what love is I want you to show me I want to feel what love is I know you can show me
I'm gonna take a little time A little time to look around me I've got nowhere left to hide It looks like love has finally found me...

Well, like all new parents I now have a one track mind...my baby and what comes out of his "south end." This evening, Jasper pooed for the first time since I got him. He managed to unload over a quart of "used water" in the dining room last night...but this poo was a first and a huge win - I was very worried... Now that he has at least made the foray into "going" while in the city, surrounded by strange noise and smells from thousands of dogs, I am cautiously optimistic.
He has made such incredible strides in the past 54 hours since he arrived in Chicago. He now goes into and out of elevators with ease. He walks/ runs with his head and tail up unless he is sniffing - when sniffing en route to the park I wonder that he doesn't get road rash on his nose!. He has made a ton of friends, both human and canine, in the park.
He is already a different dog from Saturday. That night we went to the park and he sort of shied away from other people. Now? It is totally clear to him that people have been put in the park for his pleasure/enjoyment and it is merely up to him to choose the next person on which to lavish his affections. That includes guys running and folks on bikes. Mostly though, it is the girls in the park who are the winners. I'm not jealoues when he does that...really, I'm not!
Tonight we played kickball with a two year old and his nanny. Unfortunately, the little boy wanted to see how far he could kick and Jasper has a 6 foot leash - guess how much sprinting I did? Freakin' FloJo if I do say so myself. It is a real challenge to run fast enough with a 10 month old pup on a short leash with a choke collar. We seriously had a blast and Jasper and I collapsed at about the same time...ok, I dropped first but only marginally!
I also found a very cool young lady to be his dog walker in the afternoon. She will start with him tomorrow and I can't wait. She clearly "gets" dogs and Mr J was clearly in luuuv with her.
Well, since pictures are worth a thousand words here he is: www.flickr.com/photos/ushagupta

Well, it's official - I am a Mommy! My baby's name is Jasper and he is cute and sweet and gentle and pretty as can be! My dad and I picked him up this morning from a shelter/farm in central IN. I got to meet his wonderful foster mommy and daddy Maggie and Larry. What amazing wonderful people! Maggie helped Jasper to write me a Mother's Day card which included a lot of pics from when they first got him. She included the card with all his vet records...What a WONDERFUL surprise - I totally teared up when I read it!
Jas did pretty well on the ride home. He slept most of the way but woke up a few miles from my parents place - and vomited. Poor baby...my car has sensitive brakes...I think the stop and go was a bit much for him. He did much better on the ride from Munster to Chicago. We went straight outside where Jasper saw his first CTA bus. Not pretty. Jasper hit the ground convinced the apocalypse was indeed upon us.
The girls (Jodi, Kate, Susan, Jesse) came over tonight and had a surprise baby shower. I took pics of the gifts which rather well covered the dining room table. He loved and licked on all of them, but also showed a slightly worrisome affection for our glasses of chardonnay. Each time someone poured a glass he was right there. No worries, he got none...nor did my graceful boy knock any over!!
After the girls left it was off to the park. We ran around for a long time. Not many/any other dogs, but plenty of "dog history" to sniff.

T Minus 37 hours and Counting
Guess you thought I'd never update this blog again. I'll bet you even figured I forgot my user ID and password to even get on to the site (ok, so it took a few tries, who's counting?). Well, I thought I'd update it with my big news. No, it has nothing to do with work. No, no philosopy today. Not even an observation on life in general. Just a simple statement: By this time on Saturday, I'll be a mommy!! Now, to answer the question that popped into *some* of your minds, no, I am not "knocked up" and yes, he has lots of fur. And a tail, albeit a very short one (I hate people who think docking a tail for "aesthetics" is a good idea).
I'd like to introduce the wonderful impending addition to my life: a ~10 month old mixed-breed pup named Jasper. Jasper is part Vizsla (Hungarian hunting hound) and his foster mommy says he is sweet and gentle as can be. It sounds like until he met the kind folks at PAWS Hancock his life was hard. My goal is to make those months a distant memory. Dad and I drive to central IN on Friday night and pick him up first thing Saturday.
I am a combination of happy, nervous, ecstatic, nervous and, well, nervous. I take this responsibility so seriously. I have shopped, scoped out parks, gotten a vet, bought dog tags, bought out most of the Schererville PetSmart...and I am sure I missed something. I will try to upload a pic of this beautiful boy below. If I fail, I'll call Becky or Sharon for "blogging 101."
Enjoy and plan on many more updates...and remember, going forward if you plan to read this blog? MUST LOVE DOGS!!!!!

Happy F-f-f-f-ourth!! (take 37)
Hey kids! Happy Fourth of July!!!
You know what they say about Chicago, "don't like the weather, just wait five minutes!" Our true "blue" politics may not change (thankfully), but the temps on the lakefront sure do! Well, today i spent a lovely day sunning and chatting on my friend's roofdeck...burning and sweating up a storm...well, sho-nuf by the time we showered and went for dinner, winds changed and were now off the lake...talk about going from 90 to 65 in a few!!! we couldn't decide where to eat so we flipped a coin. Dick's on the Docks won....let's just say I am taking a HOT bath before steppin out onto the deck for the fireworks - dang!!! Just like northern New England (without the cheap lobster!).
Spent a lovely weekend in IN with ma and pa - very relaxing and fun. Did some shopping, cooking (made this awesome fat-free shrimp salad) and reading....Installed DSL for our good friends - now they are surfing the net at (nearly) LightSpeed - Sharon, I am leaving it to you to get them and my parents to truly ligthspeed!!!!
Not much insightful to say tonight - I remain proud to be a first-generation American. Happy, happy 4th to all - particularly to two very special new young ladies (Julia and Maya) - may you grow to love this place as much as the rest of us do!!!!!

Sad Day for Wildcat Nation
Well....I figured that I couldn't let a year go by since my last post....but was sort of holding out to post again on the anniversary of my first post - July 4th. But as we all know life doesn't ever turn out how you plan....
For those of you who are sports fans, you may already know this - today the world of college football lost a damn fine coach and an even better human being. Randy Walker, coach of my beloved Wildcats passed away at home last night of an apparent heart attack. He was 52.
I could wax poetic about his accomplishments on the field...settng the standard for running the spread offense; turning a perrenial doormat into a Big Ten contender; finding those recruits that everyone else overlooked but in whom he saw something special....but instead i think I'll focus on something more important - Coach as a person.
You see, that is what made him special and different. The way he embraced the ideals of the smallest and only private school in the Big Ten yet believed that we could win, and win, and win. The way he realized that the important part of the phrase "student-athlete" was the "student" part. The way he'd stop and chat, no matter what else he had going on, or how inane the conversation.
I spoke with Coach once - at a Kentucky Derby party this year. He had the grave misfortune of being cornered by me when I was well into my second mint julep. I gushed about what he did for the school, the players and the alumni. I tried to gush on the spread offense (which all of y'all who know me know I can do quite well if even remotely sober). Though i probably didn't make too much sense, and sounded much more a fool than I really am on football, he smiled, replied, told me about the upcoming season...fortunately for him his wife Tammy came and very politely rescued him from my clutches.
I mourn the loss of our Coach, and I feel the deepest sadness for his family. If you see this, send a prayer their way - I know they can use it right about now....

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer
Hi all!
I'll keep this one really short. Off to Cubs game today...sunny and 85 - too perfect. In ongoing evidence that I am often not the sharpest knife in the drawer...last weekend's sunburn is now this weekend's attack of leprosy. Shoulders and chest look like something out of a horror film - just in time to go sit in the sun for 5 hours. Note to self - wear long sleeves when I see Dad and my family tomorrow...or be prepared for lengthy lecture...
Week was good and actually not too crazy. Actually left the office at 4pm yesterday - Yippee!!! Spent last night cleaning up my place...brass sink in master bath now shines again.

Okay - was going to update the blog but before doing so I read a friend'sentry from yesterday on her experiences at jury duty. Other than making me almost wet myself laughing...it made me realize I have nothing nearly fun/interesting to report. So basically, I am fine. Had a couple of fun nights with friends for sushi and have been busy at work. I really like work (did I just say that?) right now. Get to work on cool stuff and a good variety of stuff. Plus, new boss is working out well.
Looking forward to this weekend when my Aunt and Uncle from India arrive. They are spending summer with my cousin who just moved to NYC and will spend ~2 weeks here in Chicago. Can't wait to see them!! Also, Saturday I have tix to the Cubs game - SCHWING! (are girls allowed to say that?)
Oh - other news...since it is never too early to think about college football...my seats got improved this year. Now between 35 and 45...and in row 15!! Totally cool and GO CATS!!!!!!!

Sorry for not writing in a while! This past week has been totally crazy with work...not that it is an excuse but....this past week has started me thinking on the concept of friends. While the week was very crazy (not that I would ever trade it for anything - y'all know that I love to run around with my "hair on fire" - figuratively, not literally - have spent over a year growing my hair long and if anything bad happened I'd be *really* pissed), I still had a chance to see and also think about a lot of friends...and the meaning of friendship. So...here are my thoughts/conclusions - warning - this blog entry may be influenced by 8 hours in the July sun...but.....
I had a lot of interesting (and maybe not so interesting) interactions this week. Somehow they started to make me think of the concept of friends and friendship. What makes a friend? How do you know if someone is a friend?
My thoughts...a friend is someone with whom you can connect. It might be for a moment, a day, a week or a lifetime. I sort of think that friends are people who luv you both because of and also in spite of who you are...yeah, that's been said before so probably no great insight there. But to me a friend is someone for whom you would do something...anything at that moment. It can be a relative, a colleague, someone whom you've known since childhood, someone who once lent you their toothbrush, or even a bartender at a favorite restaurant. You see, to me, friends come in all shapes, sizes, durations and levels of intensity.
I realized this over the course of several events this week. The beginning of the week was pretty innocuous. Worked on Monday (own damm fault for procrastinating on something) and had some long days Tuesay and Wednesday. Thursday went out to dinner with my oldest friend - have known her since I was 2..yes, 2. We went to preschool together, and despite having moms who were from SUCH different backgrounds around WW2 that they probably shouldn't have been friends, both our moms and us formed great friendships. Our moms are still close friends to this day. And she and I? We have always luved each other, even though I have to say that we weren't as close as we were when we were kids for a long time. In the mean time, I became good friends (and neighbors with) her older sister while I was married (still miss her sister and her hubby and their kids!)...but now? We see each other far more that one might ever expect for all of the years that passed. In some ways, it is like all that time/space never happened. At least to me. To me it is like old times - only we no longer sit at the kids table - now we go out and have our OWN table and our OWN conversation! And if we had a bad day we both may use language that would get us exiled as kids ;-)
Friday was a good day at work (for the most part). Most of my deliverbales were done, so I knew I had a good chance at actually having a weekend. An interesting thing happened at work that speaks to this idea of friendship, tho. I got an email from a friend/colleague on behalf of this blog stating neglect and a desire for updates. I think it is pretty damm cool that someone who is a thousand miles away wanted to know "whassup"!! She is much more faithful about her family's blog and I love it! (Plus, she knows HTML, which as a person in IT, I feel i should know yet I ask her for tips! Go figger!) I guess that is proof that one can have a friend whom one never sees, but who cares about you!
Friday was night out with my best friend. If I had a tough week, she had a brutal week. You see, she has clients all across the world (err - "around the world" - forgot the world ain't flat). As such, she has these ungodly-hour calls with Asia. We went to our favorite hangout and were served by one of our favorite bartenders. It was a lovely night...until we asked the bartender about some bruises. They were caused by "a friend." Now, I am not sure where y'all come from, but in my book, friends don't cause bruises (DISCLAIMER: unless: a) you are a 12-year-old boy or b) it is under a double-dog-dare that involves swinging out over and then falling into a shallow creek...but I digress). I can't claim to "get" relationships (hence - no longer married) but i do know that they shouldn't hurt physically.
Saturday was a mellow day. I think the week caught up with me. Worked out, rested a lot and went to bed uber-early.
Today I spent whith a friend who I met at work in the old Ameritech days, and somehow connected with (Mrs. York, feel free to wince at the mistake, again) . In many ways we are very different, but there is something that draws us together. We had brunch...then walked like eleventeen miles (ok, maybe 2 or three, but on a 90 degree day with no wind...) We talked about stuff. Sometimes weighty (like relationships with men and/or parents and/or former spouses) and much of the time simple (how can you best make a scar go away or how can you get your kids into sports)...but for over six we never ran out of things to say.
So that has been my week. My conclusions are that I have a lot of friends...some permanent, some fleeting, many inspite of myself. I am thinking and feeling a lot more than I am typing. But for now I hope y'all get the jist of what I am saying. If your are reading this, it is because I feel you are my friend. I think'll I'll write more on this topic later. For now, I am off to buy some Solarcaine...
PS - Don't tell my Mom I am sunburned!!

Independence Day (or so) - Take 36
I was supposed to go to a BBQ tonight. But, having been bad grrl on a certain work project for 2 weeks, and having a deadline on 7/05, I elected to be somewhat of a grownup - i.e., I stayed home tonight (insert painful yelp here).
Let me put this procrastination in perspective - I did some work (not the interesting part of this message); did laundry (reference prior disclaimer) and did grocery shopping (ok, now, I sometimes LIKE grocery shopping, but I respect all of y'all who don't.) but more than anything, I spent time working and then relaxing by myself. And here's the best part....
Ya know how there are certain thing that your friends will never tell you (think - spinch in teeth, bad eyebrow-waxing-job)? And ya know how few of those secrets are ever good? Well... One of mine is GOOD and it is that one can actually (mostly) see the Chicago Independence Day fireworks (7/3) from the sundeck of my new place. Now I was told a ton of cool things about this place before I bought it from my best friend (all of which are true!!!)...but I have to say, that seeing the fireworks is beyond. While it is not a full-on-frontal-view, it is a good 75%... too cool!!! Went down to the deck just to get some air - and there ya go - fireworks!''
I have a special place in my heart for the Chicago fireworks. Although I grew up just outside Chicago, and although I CLEARLY remember going to the old Chicago Fest where Gloria Gaynor was playing and my little 11-year old soul felt every lyric of "I will Survive" even tho Mom and Dad didn't let me see her perform.....ahhh....but I digress....bottom line is that I never saw a Chicago fireworks display until I was in college.
Soooo...the summer after my freshman year in college, I had stayed up at NU to take classes and work and such. On 7/3, my school-year roomate and a good friend asked me if I wanted to head to The Taste of Chicago and see the fireworks... Clearly, I said yes.
We had a great time (and likely bent a few laws in the process), hung out, ate, drank, ... and oddly, there came this part of the night where no one talked. There was nothing to say...There were just these amazing fireworks overhead. Maybe it was the noise (for some) or the light (for others) or the fact this this display meant something.
You may think it's cheesy (frankly I do as I write this...sort of)....but for me, this was the most amazing and spectacular sight....we were celebrating the the anniverasary of the dawning of the nation of which I was a citizen - and understand I was the first citizen in either family - my parents came from Germany and India.... Technically, this wasn't my first 4th of July; that occurrced when I was 4 months old ...clearly...but it was the first were I could vote...make my voice heard...the first wherein I was truly recognized as the citizen I was...you see....at that time...at that moment...I was the only citizen in my family. I called my Dad collcect to tell him my thouhgts...he was sweet and gracious even tho I woke him up and then sent the cost of the call to him (and I had had a couple drinks)
I know I am rambling...but all I can say is that seeing the fireworks from my roofdeck tonight..on the same night as I did as a girl half a life ago (36 vs. 18) I still can't help but feel proud to be an American overall...We've done some things I regret...some things that make me proud....but overall....wouldn't trade this American life for anything!!
Happy 4th and GBA!!!!!!!
